Kids in the Kitchen: Ginger Cookies

Do your kids enjoy helping out in the kitchen? The Lil Divas, especially my youngest, love helping me cook. They have even started making me and their Dad breakfast a few times - a bagel, some fruit and orange juice! Seriously, isn't that just heart melting? It gets me every time they do it. It makes me so proud that they are learning their way around the kitchen and that they enjoy it. There is so much to learn through cooking - practical life skills, math, science, fine motor and more.

I like to try and find easy things that the Lil Divas can assist in making. Desserts are one of our favorite things to whip up together. Today, I am super excited to introduce you to Anna of Kids' Play Space. She has one of the cutest kitchen helpers around - her son. They have a wonderful time in the kitchen together. Now I will turn things over to Anna as she shares an easy recipe to make with kids - Ginger Cookies.

Our 2 year old boy absolutely LOVES cooking and there were so many opportunities for him to get involved in this simple little ginger cookie activity! Although the recipe itself is beautifully simple to whip up - we had so much fun enjoying each step along the way, and before we knew it we'd stretched it out into a full morning's entertainment!

How we played and learned in the kitchen:
* Identifying and naming ingredients
* Following instructions
* Carefully pouring
* Waiting for the cups/spoons to be 'full' or 'ready' before pouring (!!)
*Gently tapping the sifter so that it doesn't spray the entire room with flour (we learn from experience!!)
* Carefully placing the egg down so it doesn't break (before we are ready to use it!)
* Smelling the delicious mixture of butter and brown sugar!
* Opening spice jar lids - fantastic bilateral coordination practice
* Scooping/tipping
* Stirring (and holding the bowl stable with the other hand), rolling the dough between both hands- more important bilateral coordination skills ... the latter is still very much a work in progress!!
* Exploring the texture of the mixture within the hands - a wonderful sensory experience
* Picking the mixture off individual fingers (a fantastic exercise for the small muscles in the hand)
* Balancing the tray of uncooked balls without tipping it so they all fall to the floor (we lost one tray's worth in the process... oops!!)
* Waiting patiently and in total amazement while they bake - watching how they grow bigger with the oven heat!
* Enjoying the special treat of tasting warm, freshly baked cookies!

How to Bake Ginger Cookies:

Yum! Now you get to enjoy those delicious cookies you baked together. Some of our other absolute favorite Kids' Play Space 'kids in the kitchen' recipes include Blueberry Scones and Banana Blueberry Pancakes.

I really hope you enjoyed this post.
Happy baking and playing

Fun Food for Kids: Healthy Snacks with Lil Snappers

(This is a sponsored post on behalf of Lil Snappers.)

The Lil Divas are picky eaters but they love to snack.  They definitely have my sweet tooth but fortunately, they also love fruits. We keep our refrigerator well stocked with fruits that are always in easy reach. When the Lil Divas get hit with the need for something sweet or just crave a snack, I encourage them to grab some fruit and munch.

Even with the Lil Divas being fruit lovers, I do get the occasional groans when they want candy, chocolate or potato chips instead of the suggested fruit. To counter that, I usually whip up something fun and cute from the fruit. This makes it fun, enticing and entertaining and usually the groans and complaints for junk food are forgotten.

Today, I am sharing
  3 Easy & FUN Healthy Snacks for Kids
(inspired by Lil Snappers kid sized fruit).

The Lil Divas enjoyed helping me make these snacks. It is a great way to have kids help in the kitchen and make snacks that they can enjoy or the that the entire family can eat together. We used Lil Snappers fruit for all our recipes. They are kid-sized fruits packaged in convenient stand-up, re-sealable bags which allow for easy access and stay fresh storage. The Lil Divas love that they are perfectly sized for their little hands.

Orange Caterpillars

Ingredients:
Sunkist Cara Cara Navel Oranges
Raisins

As soon as the Lil Divas saw the adorable Orange Caterpillar recipe, they insisted it had to be one of the snacks we reproduced and tried at home. We decided to use the Cara Cara orange which we had never tried before. It is a hybrid of a grapefruit and a tangerine and has a pink tinted interior. Have you tried them before? They have a very sweet flavor which we all really enjoyed and I was especially pleased to find that they provide over 100% of daily Vitamin C requirements in just one orange. They are actually known as the "power orange".

The cute snack was a hit with both the Lil Divas. The Oldest Diva especially enjoyed its sweet taste and juciness. I think she may have eaten most of the bag on her own.

Apple Blossom

One of our favorite fruits is definitely the apple. We eat them almost daily. So when we saw the Apple Blossom recipe, we all agreed that we had to try it. We used Pink lady apples in our recipe. The Lil Divas got such a kick out of seeing a pink apple. We had never seen these in person before. They are crisp, sweet and just a little tart which we all enjoyed.

Ingredients:
Stemlit Pink Lady Apples
yogurt (use flavor of choice)
granola (if desired)

We cut up a few apples, arranged them on a plate and added our favorite yogurt and granola right in the middle for dipping.

It was the perfect snack and my personal favorite. I love dipping apples.

Fruity Twirls

The final fun snack we prepared together were the Fruity Twirls. We were able to use some of our favorite fruits for this fun and easy snack - Cara Cara oranges, Pink Lady Apples and bananas. It would have been great to add strawberries too but we didn't have any on hand at the moment.

Ingredients:
Sunkist Cara Cara navel oranges
Stemlit Pink lady apples
banana
stick or straw

The Lil Divas enjoyed these twirly fruit kabob snacks. It's an easy way to have a fun mix of fruit and it can even be eaten on the go which is important for us because we spend lots of time on the go and in the car during the week. These would definitely make a fun after school snack for hungry kids.

I used 1 apple, 1 orange and 1 banana and both girls were able to enjoy a Fruit Twirl and mama enjoyed the leftovers.

15 St. Patrick's Day and Rainbow Crafts and Activities for Kids

March is almost here and that means that spring is just around the corner - yay! It's time to start thinking about St. Patrick's Day, Easter, spring, rainbows and flowers. Can you tell I love this time of year? There is something about all the new life after winter that makes me happy.

St. Patrick's Day and Easter are so close together this year that I wanted to jump right in and get things going. So today I am highlighting some of our favorite St. Patrick's  Day and Rainbow themed crafts, learning activities and kid friendly snacks for you. I hope you find some inspiration here.

Crafts & Learning Activities

I enjoy making the Lil Divas' after school and weekend learning fun and playful. One of the ways I do that is by incorporating crafts and holiday themes into our activities since they don't have as much time for these types of activities at school. After all, learning doesn't stop with the school day but it can be informal, playful and fun!

Fun Foods & Snacks

Kids love fun food. My favorite thing to do is to make special pancakes for the Lil Divas for each and every holiday, no matter how big or small. They get such a kick out of it. I have my thinking cap on for what I can make this year but for now I'd like to share some special treats I made in the past.

Rainbow Pancakes

Shamrock Pancakes

Rainbow Jello

Rainbow Fruit Salad

Green St. Patrick's Day Cupcakes

Do you have any St. Patrick's Day treats, crafts or activities to share?
I'd love for you to share in the comments below.
