12 Nature and Recycling Activities and Crafts for Kids

Happy Earth Day!

Even though April 22nd is "officially" Earth Day, it's important to teach our children to celebrate nature and the awesomeness of our planet every day.  So today, I am sharing some fun ideas for learning, playing and creating that will get kids exploring nature and thinking about our planet.

Make you own Paper Roll Binoculars and go on a Nature Walk

Recycle Cardboard to use in Puffy Paint Art

Make Faux Lava Lamps with Recycled Plastic Bottles

Reuse Bottle Caps to Make Art (or Practice Letter Formation)

For even more great ideas check out our Take Care of Mother Earth Pinterest Board.

The Showcase Features:

Fall is such a perfect time to get out and explore nature. There are so many fallen leaves, pine cones, acorns for kids to touch, play and craft with. Here are a few of my favorite ideas shared on last week's Sunday Showcase that bring nature exploration and fun - home for kids to experience.

The Good Long Road painted pine cones and leaves
and then hung them up outside - what a lovely sight.
Cakes and Scribbles had fun playing with Autumn Ice.
What a fun sensory & nature activity.
Connecting Family and Seoul made a wonderful Wonder Jar,
filled with all the items they had brought home from a Nature Walk.
Two of Everything explored Autumn items with a mirror.

The Showcase Features:
Play Spaces and Fun for Kids
I don't know about you but I am missing the carefree days of summer quite a bit now that both Lil Divas are in school full time. It really feels like we have a lot less time to just play. I have been trying to make play a priority for the girls each day, even if only for a little while so it's only natural that the play ideas shared on last week's linky really caught my eye.

Creatively Blooming shared this
Simple and Joyful shared how she provides Natural Play Spaces
Mama Pea Pod had fun with a Pumpkin Fairy World

Colorful Mud Concoctions {via Mommy Labs}

Today's guest post if from the creative Rashmie of Mommy Labs. Rashmie and her daughter Pari are always engaged in fun creative learning activities. One day they will be learning multiplication by Making Math Artful, Creating Indoor Obstacle Courses or Collaging a Self Portrait.

I will now turn things over to Rashmie, who is going to share
Mud Concoctions & Play

I have two reasons to be excited while writing this article today. One - I'm getting an opportunity to write on this lovely, creative blog owned by Bern who's a terrific person. I've always received positive, friendly vibes from her. I believe a lot in the energy the vibes carry - no matter how far apart the 'sender' and the 'receiver' are. So, even though I'm oceans away here in India, I am sending you all joyful vibes. :-)

Okay, and the second reason for my excitement is the subject of the post - MUD!

June 29th is International Mud Day - a day that's gaining recognition around the world for the message it spreads - that mud play is very important for children because it restores the free, explorative nature of their play, soothes their mind and soul, helps them play peacefully with each other and basically - makes play so much more free spirited, joyful and healing.

In this post, I share with you some imaginative play in our mud pie kitchen, which I built for my daughter on our apartment balcony.

Even though not having a backyard was a constraint when it came to mud play, I still wanted to give it a try. Knowing how much Pari would love making mud pies, cookies and cakes, I set up a Mud Pie Kitchen using some odds and ends from around the house.

An un-used coffee table became the kitchen counter; coconut shells came in handy to make the perfect pies; the flower pots were used to store mud; an egg carton was used for pretend baking; and some natural elements - acorns, leaves and pods were used very enthusiastically to add 'flavour' to her cooking! It warms my heart to see the exploration and innovations that happen here. One day she's using it as a bakery, another day to make magic potions and recently - some colourful concoctions using paint. Here are some pictures of her colourful mud concoctions for you to enjoy.

Mud Play is so irresistible, we've had kids coming over every day to play. Even adults from the family!

Chocolate Sauce, anyone?

Or, may be you prefer strawberry cooler! :-)

Mud Pie Kitchen can take pretend play to another level!

Popsicle sticks, spatula, old baking tray, old cookie cutters - the kids tinkered to their heart's content. Freedom is the key to making play joyful for children. And, I think mud play offers infinite possibility for this kind of play. The un-structured nature of play without adult intervention is what children relish. And, while they're playing, they ARE learning - in the most natural way - driven by their own intuition and passion. They are incorporating their real-world experiences into their play. I would let Pari play in and with mud to her heart's content - for as long as she wanted.

What about you? :-) Do you encourage mud play for your child?

Rashmie writes about natural and creative learning for children at Mommy Labs. She takes inspiration from art, travel, books, photography and most essentially - the spiritual energy of nature to nurture curiosity and sense of wonder in young souls.

Wordless Wednesday: Earth Appreciation - Nature Explorers

What better way to show our LOVE for our wonderful planet than by simply taking some time to become Nature Explorers & appreciate what is around us.

Getting outdoors and exploring your own background or neighborhood is a wonderful activity to do with kids. Find creatures big & small, take time to smell the flowers and really take in the marvels all around us!

We had a great time studying the trees, flowers and leaves, observing insects, bugs & reptiles and anything else that struck our fancy as we walked or in the Lil Divas case skipped along on our nature walk! Our wonderful planet is full of so many wonders!

Family Fun Friday: Lil Divas Bug Explorers Extraordinaire!

We have been watching our Ladybug larvae grow into Pink Ladybugs. This was my first time observing this as well so it was all the more fun for me to share it with my Lil Divas.

We used the Insect Lore Ladybug Land and received our 10 Ladybug Larvae in the mail in no time at all.

We put them into their Ladybug Land and began to watch! The Lil Divas were intrigued byt how they did not look like ladybugs at all. I reminded them how Butterflies started off as caterpillars and they could not wait to see what would happen to our larvae.

After less than a week the larvae began attaching to the walls of the habitat and forming the hard outer shell around themselves. The process of changing into ladybugs was underway!

Once they all hatched we observed them for a few days, crawling around and decided to have a Ladybug Release Day so they could be free.

Since we have been focusing on an Insect Theme it seemed like the perfect time to take our magnifying glasses outside and go exploring - in the hopes of uncovering some bugs in their natural habitats!

My Lil divas are not usually fond of being up close & personal with bugs but in this case the tools made all the difference. How can you turn down the chance to use such a cute magnifying glass? The best part - they only cost me $1.00 (via Target's Dollar Spot)!

So what did my Lil nature Explorers uncover?

Naturally, it was only fitting to begin our exploration with our newly released ladybugs. The Littlest Diva was afraid to touch them so big sis did the honors of bringing them up close and personal :)

Then we were off to see what else we could find.

We found lots of ants,

Lots and lots of worms (yuck!),

a few spider webs,

some bees which I refused to get near enough to photograph, a butterfly that flew away before I could take a picture and some flies that were too quick to capture as well!

The Lil Divas proclaimed themselves Bug Explorers Extraordinaire and we happily made our way home (and out of the blazing sun & heat!)

Activity: Insect Lore Ladybug Giant Life Cycle Puzzle (I was lucky to find this at our local Ross Store for $4.99 a few weeks ago! I was so excited!)
