Holiday Traditions: Christmas Baking w/The Lil Divas

The Lil Divas LOVE helping in the kitchen
and one of the things they enjoy most is baking.

It has become a tradition that we bake cookies and cupcakes for our family gatherings and of course for Santa. It's a messy but fun tradition that we enjoy doing together in the days before Christmas.

We made Chocolate Chip Cookies for Santa -
did you know they were his favorite?

We made Sugar Cookies
using our holiday cookie cutter shapes

and decorated them using lots of icing, sprinkles & candies!

We also made some Cinnamon Sugar Cookies w/Hershey's Kisses

So many YUMMY cookies - so little time!

Another of our holiday traditions is to make Reindeer Cupcakes!

Do you have any holiday baking traditions?

Gingerbread Boys, Girls & Babies, Oh My!

Gingerbread Week was such a hit -
it's still going strong!

I was very leery of getting involved with anymore gingerbread dough.

Of course, the Lil Divas had their hearts set on making cookies.
We made gingerbread men last year  but after reading
our many wonderful gingerbread books together this week,
they wanted to make their own gingerbread boys, girls and babies.

I may not be SUPERMOM but I hate to disappoint my girls.
I am also NOT a gluten for punishment so this time
I decided to forgo the "this must be made from scratch" ideology
and bought an easy mix which required nothing but butter, water and a touch of oil.

Family Traditions:
Baking & Decorating Gingerbread Cookies

This time I refrigerated the dough after mixing( for 1-2 hrs.)
& I am happy to report that it worked so much better!

The Lil Divas had a great time cutting out gingerbread shapes.
We had 3 different sized cookie cutters and they used a variety of sizes
in order to make boys, girls and babies.

Once we put them in the oven, it was time to stand guard!
We can't have those gingerbreads running off, cam we?

I think they were secretly hoping a few would pop up
from the pan & run off!

Alas, all we had we had were some regular old gingerbread cookies.

We let them cool & then the Lil Divas set out to have some fun -
it was cookie DECORATING time!

They really took their time creating the cookie masterpieces.
We opted to use some easy icing tubes
& the Lil Divas drew to their  hearts content.

Pretty soon we had some yummy & wonderful
gingerbread boys, girls and of course babies,

It was a wonderful afternoon of baking and decorating.

Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed! (Red Velvet Apple Cupcakes)

In honor of Johnny Appleseed's birthday (9/26) and our Apple Theme
we whipped up these adorable & delicious
  Red Velvet Apple Cupcakes!

These are so cute & fairly easy to make.
They do require a lil prep but the end result is worth it!

To turn your red velvet cupcakes into apples you will need:
chocolate twizzlers or tootsie rolls
sour apple laffy taffy

What To Do:
1. I cut the twizzlers into 4 pieces to make the stems
2. cut the taffy into small pieces and form a leaf
3. attach taffy leaf to stem by pressing them on - they will stick
Note: keep the taffy relatively thin so it's not too heavy.
I learned this the hard way!

4. use red food coloring to turn cream cheese icing red
5. attach stems w/leaves to frosted cupcakes &
enjoy your Red Velvet Apple Cupcakes!

TP Roll Apple Trees & Crescent Roll Mini Cinnamon Apple Pies

Craft: TP Roll Apple Trees

These are so EASY to make & so festive to have around the house.

What You Need:
Toilet Paper Roll
green construction paper
green, red, yellow & brown paint
paint brushes
scissors

What to Do:
1. Paint the TP roll brown
(this is optional but we wanted a darker brown)

2. Cut green tree top
(I drew it for them)

3. add apples using fingertips in colors of choice
- we used red, green & yellow

4. Allow pieces to dry

5. Once dry cut slits into both sides of TP roll
and attach tree top to finish the apple trees

Preschool Math: Counting Apple Seeds
(from Confessions of a Homeschooler)

My Preschooler worked on this while my Kindergartener worked on homework but she decided she wanted to do it too. So that it wasn't too easy I took out the number cards and had her write the numbers for practice. I also had her count the seeds in spanish! :)

Kid Friendly Snack: Crescent Roll Mini Cinnamon Apple Pie

I have plans to bake an apple pie with the Lil Divas.
It's been on my mind - YUM!

The Lil Divas & I made some Mini Apple Pies for dessert.
None of this was made from scratch! :)
Yes, I cheated (for now) but this was SUPER EASY
& so DELICIOUS!

What You Need:
Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
(1 can = 4 min pies)
Cinnamon Apple Pie Filling
Cinnamon Powder
cinnamon sugar
Butter

What to Do:

1. Open a can of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls & unfold.
2. Break into 4 equal pieces (2 crescent rolls each).
3. spread butter on the rolls and sprinkle with cinnamon powder
4. put some apple pie filling in the middle of each piece
(I cut the apple pieces into small pieces)
5. add more cinnamon powder on top of the apples
6. fold up so that the apples are covered and it forms a mini pie
7. sprinkle with cinnamon sugar

8. bake until golden -
heat oven to 375 degrees & bake for approx. 12-15 mins

EVERYONE enjoyed them!
