I Am A Stay-at-Home Mom, I Am NOT Unemployed

(clipart from counterintuity.com)

I have been updating my resume, getting my teaching certificate in order and thinking about where to apply for a teaching position for the coming school year. I am also a nervous wreck. Why? Technically, I have been unemployed for almost 5 years. What will that do to my chances of finding a job? The teaching situation here in Fl, isn't the greatest. Lots of teachers are unemployed - because of budget cuts. I was unemployed by choice.

5 years ago, my husband and I made a choice. A choice I am proud of. A choice I feel grateful for being able to make. A choice I feel blessed to have been able to make.  I chose to take some time off teaching and focus on my children. I chose to be a stay-at-home Mom

Just because I am a stay-a-home mom does not mean I am not a teacher. I am still very active as a teacher. My intended audience has just been smaller, my own two children. I still sit and lesson plan weekly, even if it's not formally and no one is checking my plan book. In our home everyday brings a new exploration, experience and opportunity to learn. I do not leave the "teaching" to be done at school. The most important learning, especially with young children like mine - happens in the home. I know that. I live that. I am my child's first teacher.

So you see, I never stopped being a teacher. On the contrary, I think I am a better teacher today than I was 5 years ago. Why? I now know what it feels like to be a parent, to be on the other side of the situation. I know that I want the best for my children and I understand better now, all those parents who were relentless. I get it.

I have also had time to explore, get creative and focus on making learning fun. I didn't have the pressure of adhering to state standards at home. This was "extra". We could do what we wanted, how we wanted. Most importantly, we simply had fun. It actually invigorated me again with teaching. It brought that sense of joy back that I had when I first started. That feeling that you can do it all, that you can make a difference and that it can all be fun too. I feel that again.

I have a lot to offer. I have been busy (this blog shows some of that). Yet, my resume is blank for the last 5 years - no "real" work experience to add to make me stand out from the crowd.
I am worried about that blank gap - that period of unemployment. How will it measure up? Will it define me to possible employers? Will I be set aside?

There is so much I wish I could write, where that blank space is. That blank space is not a true representation of my life and my accomplishments as a stay-at-home mom. That blank space is actually where my biggest accomplishments are. It is the period in my life I am most proud of. That blank space holds so much joy, so many memories I was blessed to experience first-hand on a daily basis.

That blank space is my family. I may be a stay-at-home mom but I am not unemployed. I have the most important job in the world - I am a mom, I am a parent. I have spent the last 5 years loving and encouraging my daughters. Caring for them, playing with them and teaching them. I taught them how to dress themselves, how to share and play nicely with others. I taught my daughters their ABC's. I taught them how to write. I taught them their shapes, numbers, colors and so much more. These days, I am teaching them how to read, how to add and subtract, how to tie their shoes. I help them learn to be good people, to be caring people. I have taught them to question, to have a thirst for knowledge. I am a mom, I am a teacher.

I just wish everyone else would see all that in the space where I am forced to write unemployed/stay-at-home mom.

LOVE

When you think of  LOVE
what instantly comes to mind?

I think of.....
my family,
the life my husband & I have created
is filled with LOVE & brings me so much joy.

my daughters,
Being their mom has allowed me to experience
more LOVE than I ever thought possible.

our adventures,
the innate sense of wonder,
the unyielding excitement,
the simple truth that everything old is made new again,
as if I am experiencing it for the first time-
through them.
I LOVE that!

unconditional LOVE,
through my many mistakes,
less than stellar mom moments
and in spite of my flaws
they LOVE me.

They accept me for who I am,
the good & the bad.

I LOVE them,
unconditionally,
they will forever be a part of me.
One of the best parts of me.

That is what I think of,
when I think of LOVE.

What do you think of?

Wishing you LOVE today & every day -
Happy Valentine's Day!

Why Do I Do What I Do?

When I started this little blog (in Nov 2010) I had no idea where I was going with it or if anyone would even read it. Now, I find myself at a point where readers are asking me about how and why I do what I do here on Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas.  I am by no means an expert but I am more than happy to share my knowledge, teaching experience and personal thoughts here on Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas.

How do you decide on what you cover with the Lil Divas?
A while back I shared my Preschool Theme Calendar - this is my basic guide. It is my "goal" list of topics I would like to cover but by no means do I strictly adhere to it.  My framework is thematic and literacy based - our themes and activities tie into the books we read throughout the week.  I try to put everything into perspective with what we are experiencing in real life. We do a letter of the week but it is incorporated into our theme and I do not cover the letters in order. I incorporate math, language, reading, and science into topics as I can.

Do you homeschool?
We are not traditional "homeschoolers" in the sense that both my girls actually attend schools outside the home. So, why do I do what I do? As a teacher, I know that learning begins in the home. We are our children's first teachers and in many ways the most important. My preschooler only goes to school 3 hours a day. Most of her actual learning comes from me.

What I post here, on Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas, is the "at home" fun and teaching I do with my girls beyond their school day. That is why I chose to work from a thematic framework. We have fun with seasonal ideas, holidays and topics and I "sneak" in some learning along the way.

Most of what we share is preschool based due to the ages of my girls. Simply put - it's where we are and what we are doing at this point in time. I sneak in some Kindergarten fun for my Oldest Diva but after spending a full day at school - I do not want to overwhelm her with more work.  I try to keep it light and fun and I do not force her to participate (I admit I strongly encourage it!).  We do work on sight words and reading daily because that is essential for her at this point. Sometimes the Oldest Diva wants to work on my preschool activities with her sister, especially if they involve art or a craft (she loves those type of activities).  I don't have a problem with that and I try to be flexible and find "teachable" moments in whatever we are doing. Having fun while learning is essential. It makes it memorable and that is when the real learning takes place.

How do you find time to do it all?
I don't! I honestly plan way more than we ever do and we are almost never on schedule. I set a schedule for myself just to keep me moving along but sometimes the Lil Divas lose interest in a topic so I cut it short. Some weeks life is way too hectic and we don't have lots of time for our activities. Other times a topic proves to be really fun and we just go with it or I find inspiration and add in something completely new. That just happened when I did a week and a half dedicated to the If You Give a....books - that was not in my plans at all! We read If You Take a Mouse to School as part of our Back to School books and the Lil Divas remembered we had If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and requested we read it again as well.  How can you stop there? I couldn't - so a new theme was born! I love that we have the flexibility to do that.

I thank all of you, my wonderfully amazing readers, for coming along with us on our journey. Your encouragement and comments mean so much. I find so much inspiration in you all as well - it is truly bewildering how many creative ideas and fun ways to learn are out here in bloggyland. I love being able to share what we do and peek at what others do. It has definitely helped me grow, learn and get in touch with my inner child and creativity.

Now you know a bit more about us and how and why I do what I do with the Lil Divas. Feel free to keep the questions coming if I missed something you are just dying to know! :)

Happy Anniversary to Me (& the Hubby!)

7 years ago today the Hubby and I said "I Do"!

As I sit and think about it - it's hard to believe that 7 years
have passed since that wonderful day.

We had an amazing wedding day -
surrounded by lots family, friends, happiness and love.

Our wedding took place in NY (where I was born & raised) and we were so lucky to have so many people come in from all over to share in our special day. It was truly my dream wedding and there wasn't one thing that I would do differently.

The best part of that day was that it marked the beginning of a new journey for us.

The past 7 years have been an amazing part of my life. I am not saying that every day has been smooth sailing.  I would be lying to you if I said that but, our ups & downs, disagreements and bad days have made our relationship stronger.
We may take a few hits - but we always come out on top! :)

I look at our Lil Divas and I see what our love has created.  I wouldn't change a thing.

This is our life, our love, our happily ever after.... or as close as we can get to that :)

I love you Honey and I am looking forward to sharing the next 70+ years together (if we can be that lucky!)

Getting Your Child Ready For Kindergarten

It's hard for me to believe that one of my "babies" is headed to Kindergarten! Where did the last 5+ years go?

I have been preparing her for the big milestone - going to "big girl" school - for the past year. Both of my Lil Divas attended preschool a few hours a week and I feel this has been highly beneficial for their socialization, growth and learning.

This year the Oldest Diva was enrolled in a State Funded Pre-Kindergarten program in her preschool. The program was 5 days a week from 9am to 12pm. Although it is a wonderful program - it is only 3 hours of their day.   Much of my Lil Diva's learning still takes place with me in our home. I believe in grasping our teachable moments.  I know that young minds are sponges and this is the ideal time to encourage their curiosity and awaken their desire and willingness to learn. These things are crucial not only to later successes in learning but life in general.

Being a teacher has helped me quite a bit with this process but I realize not everyone has an education background so I thought it would be great to share a few of the basics/fundamentals that most (if not all) Kindergarten Teachers expect a child to be able to do or know when they start school. Keep in mind things may vary state to state but I believe the basics I am highlighting here are universal.

Mom to 2 Posh Lil Diva's Kindergarten Readiness Checklist:

1. Does your child know their full name? This may seem silly but I have been in Kindergarten classrooms where children do not know their last names. They are expected to know their full names - including middle names if they have one so be sure your child knows theirs. They should also know how to write their own name.

2. Does your child know your telephone number? This is a safety issue - your child should know how to reach you in case of an emergency. Make sure they know (or have written somewhere) a number where someone will likely answer the phone. In this day and age a cell phone number might be the best option, especially if parents work outside the home.

3. Is your child able to sit and listen to a story without interrupting? In Kindergarten children must be able to concentrate on what the teacher is saying, listen and follow simple directions, etc. The best way to prepare children for this is to sit and read with them and encourage them to focus on the story.  This helps foster retention and understanding.

To encourage them to be able to follow simple commands - practice at home. Give your child simple 2 or 3 step directions such as - pick up the toy from the floor, put it into the toy box and close the lid. This will prepare them for when their teacher asks them to complete work at school.

4. Does your child speak clearly? Strong oral language skills are very important in school. If you suspect a speech delay or problem it would be wise to address the issue and bring it up to your child's teacher.

5. Is your child independent? While at school your child will be expected to manage bathroom needs independently. This includes fastening and unfastening simple buttons, putting on and taking off their coats, etc. Encourage this at home so that they feel confident doing these things for themselves before school starts. Tying shoelaces is NOT expected - this is developmental and many children do not learn this until 1st grade or so. If your child does not know how to tie their own shoes I recommend using shoes or sneakers with velcro or straps. It becomes tedious and tiring for a teacer to tie children's shoelaces all day long!

6. Does your child have strong fine-motor skills. A typical day in Kindergarten involves cutting, coloring, pasting, holding a pencil or crayon, etc. Beginning writing depends on these types of skills so be sure to spend some time engaging in these types of activities at home so your child is familiar with them.

7. Does Your child have basic letter and number recognition knowledge? Though complete letter mastery is not expected going into Kindergarten, it is ideal. Minimally, your child should know the letters in their name and as many of the other letters as possible. Honestly, even though it isn't a requirement in every state - basic letter knowledge is very important. It is the foundation on which learning to read is built. The more your child knows, the easier it will be to transition to learning phonics and reading skills in Kindergarten.

Children are expected to be able to count from at least 1-10 and be able to recognize these numbers as well as know basic shapes and colors. Most children will know more than this (that is awesome!) - remember these are basic starting points. An important thing to remember is that children starting Kindergarten will be varied in their knowledge and skills. There are children who have been attending preschool and learning at school or at home for years. There will also be children for whom Kindergarten is their first school experience.

8. Does your child have good social skills? Much of Kindergarten involves working and getting along with others. Your child should be able feel comfortable doing this. Help your child refine essential social skills such as turn-taking, sharing, compromising and problem-solving.

9. Is your child eager to learn and curious about the world around them? Children develop at different rates but when a child is eager to learn and not afraid to try somehting new - they will be successful in school. Encourage your child to explore by asking questions, taking trips to zoos and museums, reading different types of books of books from the library, etc. This is the time to awaken and celebrate their curiosity and desire to learn!

10. Does your child show interest in books? If your child tries to "read" a book by telling a story based on the pictures - this is a sign that they are ready to start learning how to read which is part of Kindergarten. If your child does not show much interest in books - try to foster their interest. You can do this by reading to them daily and using fun voices and expressive reading to engage them, asking them questions, inviting them to join in on repetitive parts, and encouraging them to take participate in any active/action parts of the story.

*****

If you read through the above checklist and answered yes to all of the questions then your child is at a wonderful readiness level for Kindergarten! Continue to do what you are doing because you are on the right path.

If you answered no to a few of the questions, then now you know what you can spend some time focusing on. Please know this should not be a burden. Make it fun and you will both benefit from the experience.

If you answered no to most of the above questions then I suggest you look closely at your child's situation and possibly discuss it with your doctor or preschool teacher if your child has one. If developmental delays are suspected - it is important to seek out the necessary help.

I hope that you find my little list useful. By no means am I suggesting I am an expert but after 12+ years of teaching you learn a thing or two. I am merely passing my learned tidbits on to you in the hopes that it will help you and your child have a successful transition into Kindergarten.

Reflections on Motherhood

Becoming a Mom is a powerful and life changing experience. Whether you give birth to your child or not - once you accept a child into your heart as yours and you become their "Mother" - everything changes.

Motherhood is a journey - of the heart. It is an elite passage in which ME becomes THEM. Notice I did not say WE. The WE part comes when you form a union of love with your partner/husband. Once you are blessed with childen - it becomes greater than even your WE - it becomes about THEM. I never fully understood how amazing and how consuming our capacity to love and care for another was until I became a Mom. It was as if my heart "fully" opened up for the first time. I have loved & do love many people in my life (my husband, family, friends) but nothing equals the unconditional love that I feel for my daughters. I know that no matter what the future may hold - I will always love them. They are a part of me and they always will be.

Motherhood is an adventure. I never know what each new day will bring with these unpredictable little people in my life. It is thrilling and scary all at the same time. They open my eyes to looking at things in a different way. With them I have learned to embrace the joy, to go with the laughter, to find the fun in even the most mundane task. As we get older and lose our innonence we also seem to lose a bit of that sense of awe and wonder at the world. Seeing the world through the eyes of my daughters - I am reminded of how amazing it all is.

Motherhood is a test. It definitely feels that way some days. It can be a test of wills, a test of patience, a test somedays I feel like I've failed. It is wise to stop and remember that aside from the scoldings and time-outs - our children hold onto the hugs, the kisses, the applause, the moments when we just simply let it all go and play. So although somedays I may feel like I have failed -  I know that those good moments far outweigh the bad ones. I am far from perfect and I will definitely continue to fall short at times as a mother but the foundation of love that I have built with my daughters can withstand those moments. We can forge ahead - ever stronger and more resiliant than before.

Motherhood is a reminder. It is a reminder of all that is good in the world. As I look at the faces of my little girls - I am forced to remember that we all start out this young, innocent and open. It is up to us to ensure that the positive experiences outweigh the negative. It is up to us - to nurture, protect, encourage, teach, guide, motivate, love and above all else do no harm. These blessings that have been given to us - depend on us. We may falter and make mistakes but if we strive to do what is best for them - they can and will go far.

Motherhood is an experiment - there is no known or set "right" way to do it. We continually grow, change and adapt how we "parent". That is not only good, it is necessary. Our kids grow and change, we grow and change and time evolves and changes. It only makes sense to be willing to try new things, to let go of things that do not work, and to continue to learn and grow as parents.

Motherhood is a blessing. No matter what difficulties we may have, how many scribbles appear on walls or furniture, how many rules are not followed, how many valuables are broken or things go missing - I am blessed. I would not give up a second of what I have. For even on our worst days, I fully understand how lucky I am.

Motherhood is a gift. It is a gift that has been bestowed upon me. A gift I still often feel unworthy of. That these 2 remarkable little girls love me unconditionally, accept me for who I am (flaws and all) and still see me as wonderful is amazing. I know it won't always be this way - as they get older the sun will no longer rise and set on me in their world but for now - I embrace this gift, I savor it, I soak it all in and I am grateful for it.

Chevy Mom's Nite Out - From Tired Mama to Pampered Princess

I had an amazing time at Chevy's Mom's Night Out! I was part of a group of nine Moms who spent the day being pampered thanks to Maroone Chevrolet of Ft. Lauderdale.

We began our day by meeting up at Chevy where we hopped into 4 Chevy cars to being our Crawl!  I even got to test drive the new & highly sought after Chevy Volt which is the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year and the 2011 Green Car of the Year! If you aren't a car person (like me) you might be wondering, What is a Volt? Well, the Volt is an electric vehicle! Yes, electric as in battery operated! The Volt runs on electricity for approximately 35-40 miles on a single charge, before a gas generator kicks in for up to 340 additional miles on a full tank!  Imagine the gas $$$ savings! I can't wait for them to make bigger cars like this for those of us who need more room for our kids and all their stuff. :)

We also drove around in style in the TraverseEquinox and Cruze . I have to say of all the cars I personally loved the Traverse the most. It just made more sense for me as a family car and it looks amazing and drove so well! I could definitely pimp that Chevy ride! :)

All the cars had Onstar which came in extremely handy for us Mamas during the crawl since we were making several stops at different locations! Almsot everytime I was in a car - something went wrong - is it me, lol? Onstar helped us navigate our way quickly and I personally liked that there is a live person to talk you through it if you have problems with the voice recognition - which a few of us did! A special Thank You to GM and Maroone Chevrolet of Ft. Lauderdale for this awesome opportunity!

Now, let me take you on a trip through the rest of our action packed day! 1st stop on the Chevy CRAWL was the Contour Day Spa in Plantation, FL where we were treated to some well deserved professional Mommy beautification!  I got my hair blown-out & make-up applied for our big nite out on the town. This tired mom was transformed into a glam princess. A heartfelt thank you to The Contour Day Spa in Plantation for providing us with such wonderful services and getting us all dolled up so quickly! Everyone was super nice and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and happy. It was a wonderful experience.

Once all the Mamas were dolled up, some of us had our body fat analysis courtesy of Dr. G's Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic (yikes!) We also took a tour of the gorgeous clinic, learned a bit about their physician supervised weight loss program, sampled some of their delicious nutrition bars and got some amazing goody bags! A special thank you to Dr. G's Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic for taking the time to meet with us and providing such fabulous goodies! :)

After our time at the Contour Day Spa we headec back to our Chevy's and cruised over to Carrabba’s for a delicious pasta dinner & of course plenty of girl talk. The food was phenomenal and the company/girl talk was fabulous! I am so happy to have had the opportunity to meet and spend the day in the company of such a wonderful group of local ladies/Moms.

Finally, after an afternoon full of Mommy pampering & excitement we headed  over to Simon Mall’s Town Center of Boca Raton for the National Mom's Night Out event - “Dancing with the Moms”. There were professional dancers instructing Mom's of all ages in various types of dances and putting on performances for us as well. There were tons of raffles being sponsored by various businesses and a few of the lovely ladies I was with even won some great baskets! :)

On top of an amazing day of pampering, food, cars and fun we got another swag bag provided by Chevy!  They really did spoil us & it was so wonderful! :) I wish I had taken more pictures to share with you all but I was too busy enjoying everything :(

This Mama had an amazing day test driving Chevy cars, being primped & beautified, eating and engaging in tons of girl talk and more! It was definitely a wonderful Mom's Nite Out and a much needed change of pace for me, even if only for one day! Thank You Chevy/GM and a special Thank You to the amazing Heather Lopez of HeLo Enterprises for putting together such an amazing day!!

BTW - we tweeted our way through the day & night so if you would like to read up on some of the fun check out hashtag #ChevyMNO and see what all the Moms had to say!

Kindergarten - Why is it so Stressful?

I posted before about my Kindergarten Woes for my Oldest Diva (click here ---> Public, Charter or Homeschool?) but absolutely nothing is resolved and I am feeling panicked! :(

We did not make it into the lottery for the 1st Charter School - they put us on the dreaded WAITING LIST!

I was really hoping the 2nd Charter School would work out - this is the one I actually like & would want her to attend! Then horror of horrors - we get a letter in the mail that it has been puhed back to May 9th and will (GASP!) now also be a LOTTERY! Insert Manical Shriek HERE!

The stress is killing me - I haven't been sleeping well and my thoughts are seriously consumed with all these horrible scenarios about my poor Lil Diva not being able to go to school and the thing is - she really wants to!

I honestly don't think she'd be happy if we had to homeschool :( She is so looking forward to that Big Girl Rite of Passage that is Kindergarten! They are making a big deal of it at her preschool and of course she hears Mommy talking about it & well, it is a big deal!

So what do I do if she doesn't get in to the Charter School? We CAN NOT afford Private School and I really do not like our zoned for Public School at all. I am going to try to apply for a reassignment but you need a valid reason & well - being a high strung mom who knows what she doesn't want or like for her kids apparently does NOT count! What is wrong with these people? :)

I really wish we had more of a choice in the public school system - these are our kids and we should have more say in how and where they are schooled.

If we could afford it for the long term - I really would be a Homeschooling Mom. There's just no better way to do things - than to do them yourself! But, the reality is I will be returning to work within the next 2 years and so I feel like the Lil Diva should get her start in a brick and mortar school since that is where she will end up the following year anyway.

Who knew getting you child registered for Kindergarten would be so HARD and STRESSFUL?

CHEERS - To the Day I Hit Middle-Aged Status!

April 25, 2011 feels like a huge milestone. I am 35 yrs. old today and by all the articles, reports & research that I have been reading online, I am also apparanetly now supposed to consider myself (gasp!) middle-aged!

Really?! I know a few things aren't exactly like they once were - my hair is sporting a few (ok, more than  a few) grays, and I have a few extra pounds & some unwanted flab - I mean lack of toning issues but I certainly don't feel - OLD!

Who decides when middle-aged starts anyway? I have a bone to pick with them!

I mean, I am the same young woman that was carded for ordering a drink just a few weeks ago! Really - you can read that post here --> I got CARDED! So why simply because I hit the big 35 should I consider myself middle-aged? I DON'T!

I might be tired, a bit less toned, a lot more forgetful and unfortunately not as glamourous as I used to be on a daily basis but that's because I am a busy Mom - not becasue I am OLD! I can still clean up rather nicely if I may say so myself!

So today instead of cringing at the number 35 - as I have been for the last few weeks
 - I am embracing it!

Yes, look at me! Today, I might officially be 35 but I don't look (or feel) a day over 20!

Shh! It is my birthday so I can dream, right! :)

So, Cheers & Happy Birthday to 35 years YOUNG Me! :)

I don't care what those silly articles or reports have to say about it!

Who's with me?

THANK YOU!

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the many of you that have stopped by to leave a supportive comment, sent me e-mails, tweets and/or supportive messages. I have read them all and embrace each and every one - you have truly touched me.

It means so much to see such sympathy, understanding, and concern from you for my family & myself during our time of sorrow.

You are truly wonderful & I appreciate it all! :)

Love, Loss, Grief and Hope

Yesterday we received news that my 29 yr. old cousin had passed away in her sleep. To say that we are all devastated is an understatement. My aunt was actually there with her and I honestly can not imagine the feeling of trying to wake up one of my girls only to find that they were gone.

I kept looking at the Lil Divas today - and my heart was so heavy and full of sorrow. I can not imagine not having them in my life. I can not imagine a world where their laughter, love and energy was no longer.

My girls drove me crazy today - I was obviously a bit scattered and would not be winning Mommy of the Year Awards today - but I was feeling stressed and upset over their behavior. Then I stopped and really thought about it - I was lucky.  At the end of the day I was so grateful for each and every second we shared - even the bad ones. My aunt won't have any more moments with her daughter - good or bad. That thought puts everything into perspective.

I want to share a poem I found online that made me feel not just a bit less sad but also more hopeful:

When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me:

I wish you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say

I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too:

But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand.

And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.

But when I walked through heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
From His great golden throne,

He said, "This is eternity.
And all I've promised you.
Today your life on earth is past,
But here life starts anew."

"I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last,
And since each day's the same way
There's no longing for the past."

So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.

None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow - so today I remind all of you to live to the fullest. Love with all your heart. Laugh like there is no sorrow. Take joy in all the small and simple things that we take for granted each and every day.

Two Daughter Familes are the Happiest!?

I recently came across an article via The Telegraph about a UK Survey that has been generating some buzz. Why? Basically the study stated that having two daughters makes for the most harmonious family life.

Researchers from http://www.bounty.com/ conducted a survey of 2,116 parents of children aged 16 and under.
The study looked at families with twelve different combinations of children including everything from a brother and sister to four of the same sex. The study did not include only children.

Parents were asked to rank their children's behaviour based categories like ease of care, compatibility and overall behaviour. The two girl combination scored high in every category. According to the results of the study families with 2 daughters found that they are unlikely to fight, will play nicely and are generally a pleasure to be around. They are also 'easy to reason' with, 'helped around the house' and generally 'liked each other'. A few other conclucions were that two girls rarely annoy their parents, make limited noise, often confide in their parents and are unlikely to wind each other up or ignore each other. All these things add up to a happy and harmonious family life.

I have only been a mom of two girls for a limited time but I honestly laughed out loud when I read some of the findings of this study! THAT IS NOT WHAT IT"S LIKE IN MY 2 GIRL HOUSHOLD! :) Granted the survey was given to a limited pool of people but I am wondering if the scenario they paint is typical? My girls are loud, love to wind each other up, fight all the time and they rarely play nicely with each other for more than 5 minutes at a time and let's be brutally honest - they annoy me numerous times a day - usuallly due to all the fighting, loudness and working each other up they like to take part in on a daily basis. Maybe it's because they are still young and so close in age (15 months apart) - I can only hope that as they get older the findings presented in this study will ring true in my household. :)  I do have to admit though that behind all the fighting they do genuinely love and like each other and my husband and I both have an amazing bond with our girls.

A few more interesting results revealed by this study were that the second most satisfactory combination of children was one boy and one girl.  Parents with a child of each gender reported that they rarely argued over toys, belongings and who can have what.  These parents also reported that having one of each gender made it easier to reason with them, which made it easy for parents to sort out problems. The only downside reported of having a boy and a girl was a lack of shared interest as they grow up, which makes sense since they would most likely like different types of things.

The third easiest combination of children was two boys. Parents of two boys revealed they are often best friends throughout their childhood. The downside came as they grow up. The parents reported that the boys rarely confided in them as they grew up, which seems to be the oppostie of the two girl household.

One final thing I found interesting was that the study found that the more girls you have in a household, the more of a handful they become - even more than boys! This I can totally see. Parents with four girls turned out to be the least happy of all the parents surveyed.  One in four of parents with 4 girls admitted they were not 100 per cent happy with their lot - and one in three found it hard to cope on a daily basis.

After reading this article, I don't know if we have the best scenario in our household but I do know that I personally wouldn't want it any other way! :)

What do you think of the results of the survey compared with your own family?

To My Aunt, With Love!

My aunt has been visiting from NY the past week. It has been wonderful having her around. She is so much more than just my aunt - that name seems so inadequate. She is my second mom and one of my best friends. Our bond is a strong one. Throughout my life I have always known that I could turn to her for anything. During my pre-teen and teenage years, she was the one I often turned to with my problems, concerns, fears, etc. She has never let me down, steered me wrong or ratted me out - lol! To this day, she is one of the first people I would call if I needed to talk, wanted to share good news, needed an ally or just required a friendly voice.
Now that we are both adults, she sometimes turns to me to vent or to discuss being a mom to a young woman (my cousin is 21). It's nice that I can now return some of what she gave me as I was growing up. We will never be even - for there is no one like her. She is generous to a fault but I try to act as a sounding board and the voice of reason having endured those teenage/young adult years not too long ago myself. ;)

Whenever we are together, I love watching how my Lil Divas interact with her and vice versa. I can see how I feel about her shining through them and it makes my heart happy. They truly love her (and she them) and have so much fun together. I wish they could share these moments more often but I do not fret too much about it because I know that their bond is genuine and neither time nor distance can affect that. Our own relationship is a testament to that!

Wordless Wednesday - My Heart, My Love - My Husband

Today's Wordless Wednesday picture is of me & my hubby! We rarely take pictures together since I am often the one behind the camera so this picture was a rare treat for us! Since you always get to see our Lil Divas I thought it would be nice to show you the Mom & Dad behind the Posh Lil Divas today! :)

I Am NOT Perfect

There are moments when you are forced to really take a look at yourself or for a moment see yourself  through another's eyes (in this case my husband).  I had such a moment today and it left me shaken by how utterly unperfect I am. It's funny how a few words can do that to you. Why did it shake me to my very core? Because, in all honesty I try to do my best. I try to make everyone happy. I try to be there for my family - to fulfill their needs and yes, even their wants. So it hurts when you are hit with such undeniable failure at the very thing that you strive for.

It made me think about all my shortcomings and I am saddened by how long the list is.

1. I am NOT a perfect mother. There are so many ways in which I fail on a daily basis at being a mom that I can only hope and pray that the good far outweighs the bad.  That when my girls are grown and look back at their childhood they will remember it fondly and forgive my many failures and shortcomings. That they will not hold against me the many times I became frustrated or angry and yelled (way more often than I care to admit). I hope they don't dwell on all the times I was too busy (or simply did not want to) play. I hope they do not recall all the things that were said in frustration that I later wish I hadn't said. I hope they never realize the moments when I was longing for peace and quiet and some time alone when all they wanted was to be with me because above all things I may not be a perfect mom but I love them fiercely . Even on my worst days I wouldn't give up being being their mom for a second.  I wouldn't trade all the joy and love that it has brought into my life. I can only hope that above all my imperfections and mistakes, they can feel my love and may that be what they recall when they think of me.

2. I am NOT a perfect wife. I do not rush to greet my husband after a long day of work. Rather, I often forget to even ask him about his day as I struggle to make dinner or fight with my girls to eat. My husband works alot and many times we speak more on the phone than in person. Yet, I do not drop everything when he is home. I often take for granted that he is an adult and will understand that there are other things I need or even want to do. As a mom - we do not get time to ourselves until everyone is asleep. I can be selfish about this time.  It's unfair. I know that. Yet, I also need that time to simply unwind. Time where I am not catering to anyone else's needs - I do that all day.  It's exhausting. I know he feels that I put his needs last but that is not my intention. I just need some time where I put me first for a change. It seems that somewhere along the way of becoming a wife and mother - being just "me" has gotten lost. I have not figured out a way to balance everything. While my husband may feel that I put him last - I feel like I am overlooked. I am not a perfect wife but I love my husband. Marriage isn't easy, and being married with children is downright hard. I by no means have it figured out and I honestly wonder if I'll ever get it right.

3. I am NOT a perfect daughter. I love my parents deeply. Since becoming a mom I see things through a different set of eyes. My parents were not perfect but I accept that they did their best. They were married young and I honestly don't know how they did it all.  They worked hard to give my brother and I good experiences growing up. They tried to make us happy . They were strict - but I always knew they loved me. Yet, days (and sometimes weeks) go by and I get caught up with my life and I do not reach out. Then, I will get a call and they will remind me that I have fallen short & I feel guilty. It's so easy to get wrapped up in my own everyday and forget about everyone else but I don't want to be that daughter. I think about a time when I will not be my daughters' world and it pains me. It pains me to think that one day they will feel too busy to simply call and say hello. I hate that I am that daughter to my own parents. I hope they always know how much I love them even when I fail to show it.

4. I am NOT a perfect sister. My brother lives close by and there are sometimes many weeks when we do not see each other or even speak to each other aside from the occasional text. It's sad because we grew up in such a close knit family. We were always surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. I want my girls to know what that feels like. I love my niece and I want for her and my girls to grow up as close as my cousins did. I am failing miserably at it and it makes me sad. I have such a deep bond with my own aunts that I always dreamed I would be the same way when I became an aunt. I'm not.

5. I am NOT a perfect friend. I am the friend that rarely calls, returns calls, etc. I wasn't always that way. I used to be the friend that everyone turned to because they knew I would listen no matter what. Now, I find that I am the last to know things, the one least turned to. It hurts but I can only blame myself.

I find that wearing so many hats is hard. Being everything to everyone is impossible and I am quite obviously  falling short in all areas. How do we find that magical balance that keeps everyone happy? How do we find a way to be a good wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend? How do we find a way to keep everyone happy and still find time for ourselves in all of this? I really wish I knew because right now I feel like I am not making anyone happy and it's a hard pill to swallow.
