Celebrating Mardi Gras with Masks & Shakers

In honor of tomorrow being Fat Tuesday I decided to get in some Mardi Crafts with the Lil Divas today!

Let me just say we had some purple, green & yellow - painting, glittery & feathery mess - oops, I mean FUN! :)

Here's a quick peek at what we made:

Book:
On Mardi Gras Day by Fatima Shaik

Mardi Gras Masks:

What You Need:
1. Mask - I used foam and just made a design & cut it out based on what the Lil Divas said they wanted
2. Paint - we used purple, gold, silver, & green glitter paint
3. Feathers - we used purple, yellow & green
4. glue

Here's a basic mask made out of white foam :

this was how it looked finished:

The Lil Divas painted the masks the way they wanted to using the glitter paint. I just thought this would add some sparkle and glam to the masks. You could use regular paint.

The Littlest Diva requested a butterfly - that was a bit more work to cut out!

Tomorrow we will decide if they want to add string or glue on a straw handle. We had to let them dry well overnight before finishing - they went a bit nuts with the glitter paint!

Mardi Gras Shakers:

What You Need:
1. Plastic bottles (dried out & labels removed)
2. acrylic paint - we used green, purple & yellow
3. rice

We colored our rice using food coloring but honestly we could have skipped this step. The Lil Divas used so much paint on the bottles that you can't see the rice inside anyway! We tried to get yellow, green and purple rice but it didn't exactly look as I had hoped, oh well! We left the rice to dry and got to painting the bottles.

The Lil Divas painted the bottles using acrylic paint - once again I just let them do whatever they wanted but I did encourage them to use all 3 colors.

Finally, after letting the bottles dry we added in the rice to turn them into shakers!

Overall, it was a messy but fun crafting day! Tomorrow we finish up & then celebrate by making Mardi Gras Cupcakes! After all you can't celebrate Fat Tuesday without some indulgence! :)

Happy Fat Tuesday to you! How are you celebrating?
