Easy Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments for Kids

We made our first
  Salt Dough Ornaments

I don't know why I've been so scared hesitant
to whip up a batch of salt dough.

It was easy and our first attempt was not only a success but
we also had lots of family fun in the process!

Day #1 -
Mixing the Dough

Salt Dough Recipe:
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup warm water

Instructions:
1. Mix the flour and salt.
2. Add in the water.
3. Mix until it looks like pie crust.

4. Once our dough was ready we rolled it out,

even Daddy helped for this part!

5. Then we used our Christmas Cookie Cutters
to make our ornament shapes.

6. Using a plastic straw we made a hole at the top of each ornament.

7. Then, we put them into the oven at 250 degrees
for approx. 4-5 hrs until they hardened.

8. We let the ornaments cool and set overnight.

Day #2 -
Painting the Ornaments

The Lil Divas painted all the ornaments.

I suggest acrylic paint - it's long lasting.

I used a mix of acrylic and tempera paints because I did not have all the colors
on hand in acrylic paint that the Lil Divas wanted to use like the brown & black.

If you look at our finished product below you can see the difference.

We have a fabulous array of Christmas items.

Our batch of base painted ornaments:

Now, they just needed the finishing touches.

Day #3:
Adding the Glitter, Sequins & Details

We used some glitter paint over the base paint to add pop!
I love this stuff - all the shine & very little mess.
I need to get some in every color!

We added sequin ornaments to our trees.
(we used craft glue)

The Lil Divas painted designs on the ball ornaments

and we turned our reindeer into Rudolph & Clarice (of course!)

I LOVE how our ornaments turned out!

We will proudly display them on our family tree,
the Lil Divas are picking a few for the small tree in their room
and a few are being given as surprise gifts to grandparents (shhh!)

I see lots of salt dough in our future.
Have you worked with salt dough before?
Do you love it? What else have you made with it?
I'm looking for ideas so we can get salt dough crafty again soon.
