Earth Day Books for Kids in K thru 2nd Grade

It's time for another book list for your K thru 2nd graders! With Earth Day on April 22nd, I wanted to share a few related books that we have enjoyed.

Books for Kindergarten thru Early 1st Grade

I Can Save the Earth!: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - We have been reading this book for years. The Lil Divas love Max. He is an adorable little green monster who is also quite the environmental nightmare. It's a great book for kids to learn about protecting the earth.

Michael Recycle - I first read this book to a class of Kindergarteners and they were instantly smitten with the easy rhyming text and our superhero - Michael Recycle. I first read it with the Lil Divas last year and it became a quick favorite. It packs an important earth friendly message in a kid friendly way.

Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug - This sequel to Michael Recycle (above) introduces us to Doug - a boy who leaves garbage wherever he goes. The Lil Divas were excited to read another adventure involving Michael Recycle and while it did not surpass their love for the first book, it was an instant hit.

Fancy Nancy: Every Day is Earth Day - A great beginning reader for the Kindergarten thru early 1st grade readers that touts the message that Earth Day should be every day. Nancy goes a bit overboard in her desire to care for the earth and is deemed "bossy". She learns not to be so bossy and overbearing and along the way readers learn some ways to help take care of our planet.

The Berenstain Bears Go Green - This story touches on pollution as the Berenstain Bears find that their town dump is spilling garbage into the river. The town works together to clean up the mess and readers learn all about the dangers of pollution.

Books for 1st thru 2nd Graders

The Lorax - Classic Seuss with a perfect message for Earth Day. What would happen if all the trees were chopped down? What would we be left with? This books lends itself to great discussion about people who behave like the Once-ler and what we can do to be sure to conserve our important resources.

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: Earth Day Escapade - The Oldest Diva loves this series so I am always excited to share timely reads with her. In the Earth Day Escapade Nancy's school is putting on a special parade. The Clue Crew works hard to build a "green" float only to find it has been sabotaged a few days before the parade. The book gives readers a mystery to solve while learning about recycling and being "green".

Ready, Freddy!: Save the Earth - Freddy wants to be on Team Green but he must complete all ten points on the Earth Challenge List before he can join. The book shares that children can do things to help the earth and that their role is an important one. This is a great reader for 1st - 2nd graders.

Judy Moody Saves the World - If you haven't read Judy Moody yet, don't waste more time. This is a character that kids will surely enjoy. The Oldest Diva really enjoys these books and they are perfect for her reading level. In this book Judy tackles recycling and gets her entire class to help. She may not save the world but she definitely makes a difference. The book sends a good message about kids making a difference.

Cam Jansen: The Green School Mystery -  We do seem to enjoy our mysteries around here, don't we? Cam Jansen is another favorite series of the Oldest Divas. We are slowly collecting all of the books. In the Green School Mystery Cam Jansen and her classmates earn money for recycling cans and bottles. Unfortunately, the money goes missing but Cam uses her photographic memory to help figure out what happened. Amidst the sleuthing, kids will learn about being "green", making this a great Earth Day themed read for 1st grade and up.
