5 Fun Ways to Play & Learn With Plastic Eggs

Easter has almost come & gone. The egg hunts are already well underway.  What do you do with all those leftover plastic eggs? Before you trash them, let me tell you that we have been having lots of learning fun with plastic eggs the past two weeks.  I am excited to finally share some of what we have been up to.

These activities are great for long after Easter has come & gone so keep those lovely plastic eggs handy! There's so much you can do with them. Today, I am sharing a few of the things we have done with them (so far!).

 Alphabet and Lower/Upper Case
Letter Recognition & Sound Review

This one was perfect for my Preschooler!
I can't tell you how many times she has sat down with her eggs
and done this activity! So simple and she LOVED it!
She is fond of puzzles so I am sure that has a lot to do with it.

I mixed up the egg colors so that it wasn't too easy.
On one half I wrote uppercase letters &
on the other half I wrote the lowercase letters of the alphabet.

I mixed up the eggs and gave her the task of matching them up.
Once she had a matched egg - she had to tell me the sound(s) the letter makes and give me a word that begins with that sound.

We had a lot of fun working on this and she especially enjoyed
coming up with as many words as she could for each sound  -
she's such a show off!

Sight Word Egg Hunt

I cut out smaller egg shaped papers and wrote target sight words
that we are still working on reinforcing.

Stuff the words into the eggs and hide them all around.
Do you see them hidden in the pics below?

The Oldest Diva had a great time finding all the hidden eggs!

Once she spied an egg, she had to open it and read the word to me
before she could go in search of another one.

If she got any wrong (she didn't!) I had planned to be sneaky
and re-hide the egg, giving her opportunity to review that word again.

It was so easy to put together, fun to do & a fun way to review
some sight words! You know how I LOVE that!

Word Family Eggs

This is such a great activity!
Can you tell how much I am loving my plastic Easter eggs?!
LOTS!

We did this one together.
I had word families in mind & wrote the endings on the eggs.
The Lil Divas helped brainstorm words that belonged to that family.
Then they got to practice reading all the eggs.

To make it a bit more challenging, I took the eggs apart.
The Lil Divas (mostly the Oldest) had to fit them back together
so that the eggs made sense and matched up to the correct word family.

Addition Number Family Eggs

A fun way to practice addition and fact families for my Kindergartener!
(I will be doing some with both addition and subtraction too)

I used numbers 5 thru 20.
One one side of the egg was = and the target number.
On the other side was various addition problems that equaled that number.

I had 2 or eggs of each color so she couldn't just match them by color.

I put the addition problem halves on one side and the answers on another.
She picked a problem half and worked out whichever problem she had her finger on. She then had to find the matching answer egg.

It was a great math activity &
we'll definitely be adding in some subtraction next time.

Build a Number

Perfect for my preschooler to practice her number recognition! She loved this simple game. All I did was write the numbers 10-20 with one half of the number on each side of the egg.

I would call out a number (for example 14) and she had to build it by finding one egg half with the number 1 and another with the number 4 and putting it together to correctly form 14.

You could do this with larger numbers
or practice number word recognition (which I hope to do next!)

I hope we inspired you to have some learning fun with your plastic eggs!

What do you do with your leftover plastic eggs?

Please comment and share your fab ideas below.
I'd love to hear about it!

  8. Love these ideas but was wondering what you use to write on the eggs. I'm finding the permanent sharpie markers actually smudge off.

    1. Hi! I used a permanent sharpie but let it dry before we played. Had minimal to no smudging that way.

    2. I recently used ideas similar to this in my 1st grade classroom as a literacy center. After a few uses, many of the letters were rubbed off of the eggs :( I created them the night before so I know they were dry.

I tried placing a small piece of clear tape over the writing to keep the little fingers from rubbing off the "permanent" ink. We will see if that works. Any other suggestions??

    3. use Sharpie Paint markers. I found mine at Hobby Lobby (3.69 but used a 40% coupon). They have tons of colors. I wrote student names on my desks, they do not come off unless you use expo marker or a Mr. Clean!!
