STOP! Don't Trash Your Holiday Cards

I came across the idea to recycle and reuse my holiday cards this year via various blogs and sites on the internet (thanks to Sprout’s Green Family, GreenKids USA and Frugal Café from whom I borrowed these great ideas).  I thought it was the perfect way to be a bit more GREEN.

So here are a few ideas on what you can do with those cards – instead of just trashing them!

1.      Save card covers with no writing on the back to use as holidays postcards for next year

2.      Use pretty card covers to make gift tags (you can glue plain paper to the back of any with minimal writing if needed). Just punch a hole, add ribbon and you have a cute homemade gift tag!

3.      Donate to St. Jude’s Card Recycling Program. They accept all occasion cards as long as they are free from writing on the cover (and back of cover) and aren’t from Hallmark, American Greeting or Disney.

Mail your cards to:

      St. Jude’s Ranch for Children

Recycled Card Program
100 St. Jude’s St.
Boulder City, NV 89005

4.      If you still have cards left – consider letting the kids use them for arts & crafts or donating them to daycares, preschools or schools. Teachers can always find ways to use things for their craft projects!

Here’s what I did:

I decided I would send the cards without writing to St. Jude’s – I had 8 cards that fit the requirements (the pic has 9 but I realized after uploading 1 was indeed from hallmark, oops!)

There were 4 that had writing but that I was able to turn into a decent gift tag

The rest were photo cards so I'm thinking..... maybe put them into one of my albums????

Overall, it feels good not to just trash them! Maybe next year I will do e-cards instead and save on the paper all together on my end! J

What do you do with your holiday cards?

  1. Yes, I totally agree to recycle Christmas cards...I knew of the St. Jude donation, but didn't realize they had those restrictions, thanks for posting it. I'm going to repost that part, with a link-back to YOU, of course ;) Thrifty and Frugal by Debbie

  7. I used to make gift tags out of cards. Not as many people send cards any longer...
